National Identity Cards

Overview

It is a document that is used to show that one is a citizen of the Republic of Botswana. It is requirement by law that every Motswana above the age of 16 have one. This card is also commonly known as Omang and is valid for 10 years, after which it must be renewed. Omang forms are issued during the application process because these are security documents.

Requirements for First-time Omang Applicants

  • The applicant must be at least 16 years old.
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy.
  • Birth certificate
  • One copy of each parents’ identity document (If one or both parents are Batswana, copies of their Omang are required. If one of the parents is a foreigner, a copy of their passport is required.)
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs

Requirements for Renewing Omang

  • Expired Omang card (to be surrendered to the embassy officer)
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy.
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs
  • Proof of change of surname for applications due to change of surname
  • A fee of BWP5.00 (CHF0.40) is payable for renewals, change of surname, and damaged Identity

Requirements for Replacing Lost Omang

  • Affidavit attesting to the lost Omang
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy.
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs
  • A fee of BWP110.00 (CHF8.84) is payable for lost and stolen Identity Card.
